PIANO DEPARTMENT
Dr. SUROJEET CHATTERJI

In its continued endeavor to educate and illuminate aspiring musicians, KM Music Conservatory offers a rare opportunity to be trained under
Dr. Surojeet Chatterji, a passionate mentor with a missionary zeal.

A quintessential alumnus and the recipient of the highest degree from the Moscow Conservatory, Dr.Chatterji was the first Indian musician to be chosen and granted a full Soviet Scholarship by the Offices of the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her Principal Secretary P.N.Haksar. Initiating his studies with Ms. Naju Shapoorjee at Allahabad, and having attained his Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music, London, under Mr. Hosie Palamkote at the Delhi School of Music, he went on to Russia’s most prestigious institution where he studied for over a decade. There, his unflinching dedicated perseverance made him a vital link and part of the rich lineage and musical pedigree, tracing itself by way of distinguished pianists and pedagogues (such as Rudolf Kerer, Irina Smorodinova, Emil Gilels, Berta Reingbald, Anna Essipova, Theodore Leszichetsky and Carl Czerny), and going all the way to Ludwig Van Beethoven. There on, Dr. Chatterji immigrated to America , where during his 25 years of teaching, his most

noteworthy achievement was to inspire the underprivileged youth, least exposed to western classical music and yet making them proficient performers in amazingly short periods of time. Dr.Chatterji at present, is in India and is part of the faculty at KM Music Conservatory with a mission to impart and share his accumulated wealth of experiences from across the globe.

In a very simplified and yet detailed step by step scientific explanation, Dr. Chatterji’s methodology demonstrates the anatomical, choreographical and highly emotive movements of the body and its total immersion into the instrument. The process transforms the otherwise percussive piano into almost a vocal or a string instrument, resonating forth in an exquisite frictionless fluidity.. This, applied to ingeniously customized exercises, brings speed and power enabling the young learner to progress much faster than conventionally possible. Besides, the inclining in of the body in a posture of total surrender into the piano creates an all absorbing intense physical intimacy, stirring the innermost poetic imagination of the pianist and empowering one to breathe life into the piano, as if it had a soul of its own. The pianist and the piano become one and it is this fusion, that inspires the artist to discover oneself, resulting in unprecedented possibilities and revelations in journeys of uninhibited expressions.

This methodology and its immense successes can be witnessed and heard in the attached video and in the accolades from musical educationists of many countries, from US politicians, renowned conductors like Maestro Zubin Mehta and from world famous institutions such as Russia ’s Bolshoi Theatre
